Bio
Kelly Dawes has never let type 1 diabetes define her—but she has used it to define her purpose. Diagnosed over 40 years ago, she turned personal experience into powerful advocacy and leadership, building a life around helping others navigate diabetes with strength, knowledge, and connection.
With more than 25 years of experience in health and wellness, Kelly brings a diverse background that includes dialysis care and previous certification as a personal trainer with a specialization in Special Populations—focusing on seniors, individuals with chronic conditions, and those living with obesity.
In 2019, she earned her certification from the Association of Diabetes Care & Education Specialists (ADCES) and has since become an influential voice in diabetes policy, advocating each year on Capitol Hill through both ADCES and the Diabetes Patient Advocacy Coalition (DPAC).
Kelly founded Grownup T1Ds, a nonprofit that creates safe, supportive spaces for adults living with type 1 diabetes. Through in-person meetups, the group combats isolation and fosters community connection—proving that support doesn’t end at diagnosis.
A former boxer, Kelly credits the sport with teaching her resilience and both mental and physical strength. She’s also a travel enthusiast and unapologetic optimist who brings energy, warmth, and authenticity to everything she does. Her mission is simple: to ensure no one with diabetes ever feels alone.
