Living with type 1 diabetes poses unique challenges that require ongoing support, education, and resources. Fortunately, numerous nonprofits have emerged that are dedicated to improving the lives of those affected by T1D.

Breakthrough T1D (Formerly JDRF)
Established in 1970, the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation's primary goal is to accelerate life-changing breakthroughs to cure, prevent, and treat type 1 and its complications. Breakthrough T1D funds research initiatives, advocates for policies supporting diabetes research, and provides resources for individuals and families living with diabetes. Beyond Type 1
Beyond Type 1 is a global organization striving to improve the lives of those affected by type 1 diabetes (T1D) and to find a cure. They engage the diabetes community through digital platforms, offering support, education, and advocacy. Beyond Type 1 also focuses on dispelling myths and stereotypes surrounding diabetes and promoting a positive and empowered outlook on life with the condition. Ever wanted to learn more about type 2 diabetes? Beyond Type 1’s sister site, Beyond Type 2, provides resources and stories that are geared toward those living with T2D.

Taking Control of Your Diabetes (TCOYD)
Taking Control of Your Diabetes (TCOYD) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to educating and motivating individuals with diabetes to take an active role in their health. Through national conferences, workshops, and online resources, TCOYD provides valuable information on diabetes management, including the latest research and technological advancements, and emphasizes the importance of a proactive approach to diabetes care.

Diabetes Research Institute Foundation
The Diabetes Research Institute Foundation focuses on funding cutting-edge research to cure and treat type 1 diabetes. Their commitment to finding a biological cure sets them apart, and they support innovative research projects aimed at developing therapies that restore natural insulin production. The foundation collaborates with scientists, healthcare professionals, and the diabetes community to advance the field of diabetes research.

DiabetesSisters
DiabetesSisters (DS) fosters a supportive community for women with all types of diabetes—type 1, type 2, LADA, MODY, gestational, and prediabetes. Founded in 2008, the nonprofit encourages women to share their experiences and find the right resources to navigate their health journeys.

The organization offers peer support groups, type 1 screening information, and educational resources, all of which are available through virtual programs and on-demand content. DS is also expanding its services to reach more diverse communities, launching Mujeres Siendo Reales –Conversaciones Sobre Diabetes (Women Being Real – Conversations About Diabetes),a series featuring two Spanish-speaking women living with diabetes.
DiabetesSangha
DiabetesSangha is a nonprofit organization dedicated to enhancing the lives of individuals affected by T1D through meditation, mindfulness, and community support. Established in 2022, the group was founded by Sam Tullman, Brooke Cassoff, and Peter Friedfeld, who recognized the transformative impact of contemplative practices on diabetes management, bridging the gap between mental and physical health.

The organization’s core services include live guided meditations, educational programs and community support. Cultivating a sense of belonging in a supportive environment is vital for managing the emotional health of living with T1D.
T1International
T1International stands out as a global advocacy organization committed to ensuring access to insulin, supplies, and healthcare for everyone affected by diabetes. Recognizing the global issue of insulin affordability and accessibility, T1International advocates for systemic change in healthcare policies and practices. They empower individuals to become advocates for their own rights and collaborate with other organizations to amplify their impact. T1International's emphasis on the human right to insulin makes them a key player in the fight against the rising costs of diabetes care worldwide. By addressing the root causes of insulin inaccessibility, T1International contributes to creating a more equitable and sustainable future for individuals with T1D on a global scale.
